Variety traits
Parthenocarpy is the genetic ability of a plant to form fruits without the process of pollination. This trait allows for a stable yield of seedless fruits in greenhouse conditions or during adverse weather when pollinating insects are scarce.
Mentioned in descriptions 713 varieties reference book.
Parthenocarpy manifests in the formation of fruits without pollination, which ensures stable yields regardless of insect activity or weather conditions. Plants of this type usually form seedless fruits or fruits with empty seeds, which prevents deformation and yellowing caused by the absence of a normal seed-setting process. Most of these hybrids feature a predominantly female flowering type, allowing for more efficient use of the planting area.
During variety testing, this trait is evaluated by the percentage of fruit set relative to the total number of female flowers under strict isolation. Gradations ranging from weak to very strong are distinguished, where the unit of measurement corresponds to the percentage of formed ovaries. When choosing a variety, it is taken into account that some hybrids possess partial parthenocarpy, maintaining the ability to set fruits both in the presence and absence of pollination.
The expression of parthenocarpy is a varietal trait, yet its manifestation depends on environmental conditions. Optimal factors include moderate temperatures around 17–18 °C, high light intensity, short day length, and balanced mineral nutrition. The intensity of the trait may also change depending on the age of the plant, and in the case of accidental pollination by insects, the fruits of some parthenocarpic varieties may lose their marketability.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
