Cotton lodging is the deviation of the stem from a vertical position, caused by a weak root system and excessive vegetative growth under conditions of abundant irrigation.

The tendency for lodging in cotton is closely linked to root system morphology: susceptible plants exhibit a shortened upper thickened portion of the main taproot. This trait is most pronounced on highly fertile soils under excessive moisture, when vigorous vertical stem growth is not supported by sufficient development of the root anchorage.
Lodging significantly complicates mechanized harvesting and crop management, and also worsens phytosanitary conditions in the lower canopy due to reduced light penetration and aeration. In breeding practice, variety resistance is evaluated by a comparative analysis of the proportion of lodged plants in a plot and by studying the morphological parameters of the root system in comparison with standard varieties.
