Diseases
Gossypium hirsutum L.
A fungal vascular disease of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) caused by Verticillium dahliae, manifesting as chlorosis, leaf necrosis ("watermelon striping"), and vascular bundle occlusion.
In the reference 43 varieties crop Upland cotton, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causative agent of the disease is the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae, which persists in the soil in the form of microsclerotia. The pathogen is divided into two main pathotypes: the defoliating type, which causes mass leaf shedding, and the less aggressive non-defoliating type. Physiological races are also distinguished, which determines the specifics of breeding work.
Key symptoms include the appearance of yellowish spots on the lower leaves while the veins remain green, browning of vascular bundles in stem cross-sections, and premature wilting during the budding-flowering stage. The acute apoplectic type proceeds with sudden wilting of the entire plant. Resistance to the disease in cotton is polygenic in nature and is often controlled by dominant alleles, with breeding varieties classified by their degree of tolerance to local races of the pathogen.
