Verticillium wilt of rapeseed

Brassica napus var. napus

A fungal disease of rapeseed caused by the specialized pathogen Verticillium longisporum, characterized by xylem colonization and premature plant ripening.

In the reference 125 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary causal agent of Verticillium wilt of rapeseed is the fungus Verticillium longisporum, a specialized pathogen of the Brassicaceae family that survives in the soil as microsclerotia for over 10 years. Infection occurs through the root system, followed by colonization of the plant's vascular system.

Despite its name, the disease rarely manifests as classical wilting. Characteristic signs include vertical stem striping, premature yellowing and ripening, degradation of the stem pith and root, as well as the formation of small black microsclerotia under the epidermis by the end of the growing season.

The genetic resistance of rapeseed to the pathogen is characterized as quantitative or tolerant; effective genes for complete resistance have not yet been identified. Breeding efforts are focused on improving general stem resistance, as control methods for this pathogen are limited.
