Lodging in smooth hydrangea refers to the tendency of stems to bend and collapse towards the ground under the weight of large inflorescences.

This phenomenon significantly reduces the ornamental value of the shrub by distorting its shape and increasing the risk of mechanical stem damage. Resistance to lodging is determined by the ability of the stems to maintain the inflorescences in an upright position; low resistance is characterized by pronounced stem bending during the flowering period.

To minimize lodging, formative pruning is employed to stimulate the growth of stronger shoots and ensure the proper development of scaffold branches. Breeding programs for this species are also focused on developing cultivars with increased stem rigidity, capable of maintaining an upright shrub form without the use of additional supports.
