Variety traits
Hydrangea arborescens L.
The ability of the species Hydrangea arborescens to withstand the conditions of USDA hardiness zones 3–9. High winter hardiness is due to the formation of flower buds on the current year's growth, which guarantees flowering even after partial or complete freezing of the above-ground part of the pla…
In the reference 5 varieties crop Smooth hydrangea, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess the winter hardiness of smooth hydrangea, the USDA plant hardiness zone scale (range 3–9, corresponding to temperatures down to –40 °C) and the 7-point scale of the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences are used, which take into account the degree of damage to annual shoots during the winter period.
The main biological characteristic of the crop is that flowering occurs on the current season's growth. This allows the plant to fully recover and bloom in the same year, even after severe frosts that cause shoots to die back to the soil level or snow cover.
Such high adaptability makes the species suitable for cultivation in regions with cold climates. The ability to bloom on 'new wood' also allows for short annual spring pruning, which stimulates vigorous growth and the formation of large inflorescences.
