Grafting and Budding of Peach

Peach grafting is characterized by high selectivity regarding rootstocks and the use of early summer budding methods to accelerate seedling production. The primary challenge is graft incompatibility, which manifests as 'pitting disease', nutrient deficiency, or weak union.

Budding is considered the most reliable method for peach propagation. The use of early summer budding in June-July allows for accelerated seedling development, while a spring cut to 'reverse growth' (shortening the scion to 5–10 cm above the graft union) stimulates the formation of a more vigorous shoot. Winter bench grafting is also employed to increase the yield of standard planting material.

The peach exhibits pronounced incompatibility with a range of rootstocks, including myrobalan plum, which manifests as 'pitting disease', rootstock starvation, or weak union. Optimal rootstocks include peach seedlings, which provide the best compatibility but are sensitive to soil conditions, as well as apricot, almond, and specialized clonal rootstocks (Kuban 86, Brompton, VVA-1).

Technical care after grafting requires the mandatory removal of sprouting rootstock shoots in the graft union zone until 3–5 leaves have developed on the scion part of the plant. When using peach seedlings as rootstocks, one should avoid heavy, calcareous, saline, and gravelly soils.
