Melon Leaf Spot
Cucumis melo L.
A group of infectious diseases in melons manifesting as spots of various shapes and colors, caused by fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Alternaria leaf blight, caused by Alternaria cucumerina, is characterized by round brown spots with concentric zonation. Anthracnose (Colletotrichum lagenarium) appears as yellowish-brown spots with a dark brown border, which become covered with a pink bloom under high humidity or form perforations under dry conditions.
Bacteriosis, or angular leaf spot, is caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. lachrymans and is distinguished by water-soaked spots constrained by leaf veins, with possible bacterial exudate formation. Gummy stem blight (Stagonosporopsis cucurbitacearum) causes the appearance of brown spots with a yellow halo, leading to leaf desiccation and stem cankers.
Genetic resistance to these diseases in melons is most often quantitative in nature and is associated with QTL identification. An example of breeding material is the inbred line MR-1, which possesses resistance to Alternaria leaf blight. Resistance to gummy stem blight can be controlled by several independent loci.
