Barley Leaf Spot Diseases

Hordeum vulgare L.

A group of fungal diseases of barley, including net blotch, stripe disease, spot blotch, and scald. Each disease has specific pathogens and characteristic visual symptoms of leaf blade damage.

Net blotch is caused by the fungus Drechslera teres and manifests as oval spots with a net-like pattern, while stripe disease, caused by Drechslera graminea, leads to chlorotic stripes and longitudinal leaf splitting. Spot blotch (pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana) also affects roots and grain, and scald is characterized by rectangular spots delimited by veins.

Genetic resistance to these diseases is controlled monogenically, oligogenically, or polygenically. For scald, the genes Rrs4, rrs6, rrs7, and Rrs9 have been identified. High pathogen variability forces breeders to employ gene pyramiding strategies to increase the durability of cultivars, using modern molecular marker methods.
