Pepper Leaf Spots

The most significant diseases of pepper are bacterial leaf spot, caused by bacteria of the genus Xanthomonas, and cercospora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Cercospora capsici.

Bacterial leaf spot is caused by a complex of bacteria, among which Xanthomonas euvesicatoria is dominant. The disease manifests as water-soaked spots that turn into black angular lesions with a yellow halo, leading to defoliation. For resistance breeding, dominant genes Bs1, Bs2, and Bs3 are used, which are responsible for the hypersensitive response, as well as recessive genes bs5, bs6, and the bs8 gene, which acts against Xanthomonas gardneri.

Cercospora leaf spot, or frog-eye leaf spot, is caused by the fungus Cercospora capsici. On various plant organs, circular spots up to 1 cm in diameter form with a characteristic light gray center and a dark brown border. As the affected tissue areas age, the center of the spots often cracks, creating holes.
