Ramularia leaf spot

Ramularia collo-cygni

Ramularia leaf spot is a fungal disease of barley that manifests as rectangular reddish-brown spots with a chlorotic halo. The disease is characterized by high harmfulness and often occurs in a latent form, complicating visual diagnosis.

Mentioned in descriptions 432 varieties reference book.

Ramularia leaf spot appears as pinpoint necroses and rectangular lesions about 2×0.5 mm in size, which are restricted by leaf veins and are clearly visible on both sides of the leaf blade. The spots have a reddish-brown color with a characteristic yellow chlorotic halo, and sporulation in the form of black dots can develop on the dead tissues.

The development of the pathogen is most intense at temperatures from +15°C to +20°C and high air humidity exceeding 85–95%. The disease usually becomes noticeable in the second half of the growing season, starting from the heading or flowering stage, although primary signs may appear significantly earlier.

The evaluation of variety resistance is carried out using phytopathological monitoring methods with visual assessment of the degree of leaf surface infection. Given the ability of the pathogen to develop as an endophyte and the complexity of diagnosis, PCR methods are used for accurate pathogen identification during variety trials.
