The causal agents of rust on rough fescue are fungi of the genus Puccinia. Specifically, the species Puccinia poae-nemoralis and Puccinia graminis ssp. graminicola are involved in infecting the crop. The infection manifests as yellow spots on the leaves and stems, where raised spore-filled pustules, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo, subsequently develop.

Severe infection of this crop is accompanied by mass dieback of the leaf blade, stunted growth rates, and an overall reduction in plant vigor. In breeding practice, the resistance of varieties to the pathogen is typically evaluated using an expert method on a nine-point scale.
