Rust diseases of triticale are caused by the fungi Puccinia triticina, P. striiformis f. sp. tritici, and P. graminis f. sp. tritici, which have adapted to this wheat-rye hybrid.

Triticale is susceptible to leaf, stripe, and stem rust. Leaf rust manifests as uredinia on leaf blades, causing them to curl and dry out. Stripe rust is characterized by localized infection and can cover up to 100% of the flag and penultimate leaf area. Stem rust affects stems and leaf sheaths and is the most dangerous form, capable of leading to plant death.

Breeding for resistance utilizes Lr, Sr, and Yr genes similar to those used for wheat, although the absence of the D-genome in hexaploid triticale limits their spectrum. Comprehensive resistance in varieties is confirmed by the presence of genes such as Lr26, Sr31, Yr9, and others. The evolutionary adaptation of pathogens, including virulent races like Ug99, poses a threat of overcoming the resistance previously provided by specific resistance genes.
