A dangerous disease of sunflower caused by the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea, which affects all plant organs and can lead to significant yield losses.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Botrytis cinerea, which possesses a broad phylogenetic specialization. The infection affects sunflowers at all growth stages, causing seedling rot, stem infection, and the most damaging form of the disease — head rot. A characteristic ash-grey mycelial mat forms on the affected tissues, and as the pathogen develops, black sclerotia are formed, which persist in the soil and on crop residues.
Intraspecific classification of pathogen races specific to sunflower does not exist due to the high adaptability of the fungus. There is no complete genetic resistance to this infection in sunflowers. Varieties and hybrids are evaluated based on their level of tolerance or complex resistance, as the presence of specific genes that block the development of Botrytis has not been identified.
