Botrytis Blight of Lily

The primary causal agent of gray mold, or "lily blight," is the fungus Botrytis elliptica, which possesses narrow specialization and infects mainly plants of the genus Lilium. In some cases, if tissues are injured, the polyphagous fungus Botrytis cinerea may also be involved in the infection process.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as the appearance of round, watery spots of a grayish-brown or reddish-brown color, often surrounded by a purple border. In high humidity, the spots grow rapidly, covering the leaves and spreading to the stems, which causes them to break, and also infect the buds, leading to their deformation and dropping.

At present, the nomenclature of specific R-genes for resistance to Botrytis elliptica has not been established. Research focuses on the role of the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway, specifically on the expression of the LhSorPAL1 and LhSorPAL2 genes, whose activity level correlates with cultivar resistance.
