Grapevine vigor is a varietal trait that determines the intensity of vegetative mass development. The indicator is assessed based on the length of annual shoots, the weight of prunings, and the 9-point OIV scale.

To classify the vigor of Vitis vinifera varieties, the length of the annual growth is used: very low up to 0.5 m, low 0.6–1.2 m, medium 1.3–2.0 m, high 2.1–3.0 m, and very high over 3 m. Measurements are taken during the period from bud burst to the cessation of growth; the shoot diameter at the base is also taken into account.

High vigor requires intensive 'green operations' — shoot thinning, desuckering, and tying — to prevent canopy density and improve aeration. Highly vigorous varieties require an increased bud load to prevent excessive shoot growth ('bull canes'), which is critical for crop quality and cane maturation.

Maintaining plant balance is a key task of viticultural practices, as excessive or insufficient growth negatively affects yield. Furthermore, there is a correlation between high vigor and the frequency of symptoms of trunk perennial wood diseases.
