Variety traits

Maize seedling vigor

Zea mays L.

The ability of maize seeds to form uniform emergence and develop actively under field conditions while exposed to stress factors such as low temperatures, deep planting, or moisture deficit.

In the reference 39 varieties crop Maize, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate this parameter, specialized stress-simulating tests are used: cold tests at 10°C, seedling emergence tests through soil or sand layers, as well as analysis of biometric parameters, such as seedling length and dry weight. The results are expressed as a percentage of normally developed plants under stress conditions or as a Vigor Index.

High seedling vigor, reaching 85% or more in high-quality hybrids, ensures uniform stand establishment, effective weed competition, and adaptation to early sowing dates. Low values indicate weakened seed material, leading to poor plant stand, uneven development, and a subsequent reduction in yield potential.
