Freesia Inflorescence

The freesia inflorescence is a unilateral branched raceme of a spicate type. The number of flowers is a key criterion for productivity: from 2–5 in species forms to 7–12 in modern hybrids.

According to UPOV guidelines for the genus Freesia, the inflorescence is evaluated on the first flower stalk at the full flowering stage based on measurements from a sample of at least 10 plants. For cut flower production, the quality standard is defined as having 7 or more flowers per flower stalk.

The biological characteristics of the inflorescence require specific agrotechnical practices. Large double inflorescences often require vertical support, as their weight causes stem lodging. Harvesting is performed when the first flower is colored and open, with the inflorescence containing a sufficient number of developed buds capable of opening in a vase.
