For successful freesia flowering, it is critical to maintain a cool temperature regime, especially during the inflorescence initiation stage, when night temperatures should be in the range of +4…+13°C. Raising the temperature above +16…+17°C at the beginning of the growing season often leads to developmental abnormalities or a complete absence of flower stalks, while insufficient light intensity induces plant elongation and stem curvature.
The root system of freesia is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, therefore porous, well-drained substrates are necessary for planting. A specific care requirement is the intolerance to fluoride, which causes leaf tip necrosis, precluding the use of certain types of superphosphates. Due to physiological traits, varieties 50–60 cm in height require the installation of supports to prevent the lodging of vegetative mass and flower stalks.
