Potted Hippeastrum culture is a technology of treating the bulb as a biological pump, where the key factor is the balance between forced dormancy periods and scape forcing. Unlike the biologically related genus Amaryllis, hybrid Hippeastrum cultivars are easily susceptible to artificial life cycle regulation through temperature treatment and planting dates, which makes it possible to ensure flowering by a target date at any time of the year.

For pot cultivation, it is critical to observe the minimum container volume: the distance between the bulb and the pot walls should not exceed 2–3 cm, as excess space stimulates vegetative mass development at the expense of generative growth. It is standard practice to bury the bulb only to 1/2 or 1/3 of its height above the substrate surface. Furthermore, the crop has high hydroponic potential, allowing plants to be grown in expanded clay or water without the use of soil mixes.
