Within the framework of DUS testing, Hippeastrum double-flowering is classified as a flower type, where the double form is characterized by the presence of more than 6 perianth segments. In such cultivars, the shape of the petaloid staminodes, which can be regular or irregular, is additionally evaluated.

Biologically, double-flowering in this crop is associated with the transformation of stamens and pistils into petal-like structures, which often causes partial or complete sterility. Because of this, seed propagation of double forms is difficult, and vegetative propagation is preferred in commercial production.

The expression of this trait can be unstable and depends on lighting conditions, mineral nutrition, bulb age, and flowering season. Double-flowering is not a dominant trait, and breeding work with it is complicated by the limited fertility of the plants, which requires the use of specific pollination techniques.
