Hippeastrum scape

The Hippeastrum scape is a key morphological trait, the length of which is measured when assessing varieties for distinctness, uniformity, and stability.

The length of the scape, often referred to as the stalk, is measured on mature plants with fully developed flowers and averages 80 cm. This parameter is an important criterion for ornamental value and suitability of the variety for forcing, and the number of scapes produced by a single bulb is usually one or two.

The development of the scape depends directly on the nutrient reserves in the bulb accumulated in previous seasons. When growing, the strength and straightness of the stalk are important, which depend on the light level and temperature regime: at 18–20°C, growth rates are restrained, which prolongs the flowering period, whereas a lack of light leads to undesirable stretching and loss of stability.
