Translucency manifests as a tissue defect in which cell sap leaks into the intercellular space, giving the flesh a characteristic "glassy" appearance. This condition leads to a loss of commercial quality, as affected fruits are prone to rapid spoilage and have reduced shelf life.
The primary causes of this pathology are calcium and boron deficiencies during the active fruit-filling period, as well as sharp fluctuations in soil moisture and plant shading, which cause spikes in cellular osmotic pressure. In breeding, resistance to this phenomenon is assessed as the cultivar's ability to maintain flesh structure under unstable growing conditions.
