Variety traits
Gossypium hirsutum L.
Cotton tolerance to abiotic stresses determines the plant's ability to maintain productivity and fiber quality under conditions of drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures.
In the reference 24 varieties crop Upland cotton, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess cotton tolerance, a complex of methods is used, including cell membrane thermostability (CMT), gas exchange parameters, and photosynthetic rate. Important biochemical markers include proline accumulation under osmotic stress and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase and superoxide dismutase, whose activity can increase several-fold.
Economic evaluation of tolerance is conducted using the HTI index in comparison with control varieties. Highly tolerant genotypes maintain stable photosynthesis and boll weight under stress conditions. Sensitive forms react with a sharp accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, fruit shedding, and loss of fiber quality.
