Brassica oleracea L. (Brussels Sprouts Group)
The yield of Brussels sprouts is evaluated by the mass of marketable sprouts per unit area. This indicator depends on planting density, the genetic traits of hybrids, and the crop's ability to form sprouts 2–4 cm in diameter during a long growing season.
In the reference 25 varieties crop Brussels sprouts, where this is mentioned in the description.
When assessing productivity, the number of sprouts per plant, their average mass of 10 to 20 g, density, and diameter are taken into account. In professional production, yield is measured in tons per hectare or kilograms per square meter, with only the marketable fraction being extracted from the total biomass volume.
Average productivity indicators are 15–20 t/ha, although they vary depending on the variety: modern hybrids provide higher uniformity and marketable yield compared to older breeding forms. Plant density has a critical influence on the result, as does maintaining the temperature regime within 15–20 °C, since overheating above 25 °C delays sprout filling.
To maximize harvest, a selective harvesting method is applied, starting with the lower, most developed sprouts. This allows for stimulating the growth of the remaining ovaries and increases the total marketable yield, which is extremely important during a long vegetative cycle reaching 180 days.
