Unlike a number of other agricultural crops, herbicide resistance is not fixed in the tomato genotype. Current research is aimed at finding sources of tolerance among wild species, such as Solanum habrochaites and Solanum cheesmaniae, for the purpose of protecting plants from accidental pesticide drift rather than for creating systemic chemical crop protection technologies.
The evaluation of the trait in experimental lines is carried out through visual monitoring of damage, including the recording of chlorosis, leaf blade deformation, and growth retardation 28 days after treatment. Biotechnological methods include the selection of cell cultures under conditions of exposure to inhibitory concentrations of active ingredients.
In production practice, tomatoes show marked sensitivity to herbicides, including products formally approved for use in this crop's plantings. Damage after herbicide application can range from 15% to 54%, which leads to a statistically significant decrease in marketable yield and fruit quality.
