Diseases
Blossom-end rot is a physiological metabolic disorder caused by a local calcium deficiency in fruit tissues. It manifests as sunken dark spots at the blossom end of the fruit under conditions of water or temperature stress.
Mentioned in descriptions 922 varieties reference book.
Blossom-end rot is a non-infectious physiological disorder caused by impaired calcium transport to the fruits. A watery spot forms at the apex of the developing fruit, which eventually darkens, becomes sunken, and turns dark brown or black with a dry surface.
The development of the disease depends on environmental conditions, including water and temperature stress, as well as nutrient imbalances in the soil. Risk factors include sudden fluctuations in moisture, high air temperatures, excessive nitrogen or calcium antagonist levels, and increased soil acidity.
Genetic resistance of a variety is determined by the plant's ability to effectively distribute calcium and the structural stability of the fruit cell walls. Varieties with elongated fruit shapes, large-fruited types, and pink-fruited forms are the most susceptible to the pathology due to anatomical features and thinner skin.
Resistance assessment in variety trials is conducted through phytopathological monitoring, taking into account the percentage of affected plants and the intensity of necrosis. To differentiate genetic resistance from the influence of agrotechnical factors, trials require standardized growing conditions.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
