Germination — Cannabis sativa

Cannabis sativa L.

The germination capacity of Cannabis sativa seeds is a mandatory criterion for assessing seed quality, determining the calculated seeding rate required to achieve target plant stand density.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Hemp, where this is mentioned in the description.

Laboratory determination of hemp seed germination is carried out at a temperature range of 20 to 25 °C. Regulatory standards depend on the seed class: for the first class, germination must be at least 90%, for the second — 80%, and for the third — 70%, while adjusted standards of 85% and 75% are provided for Central Russian hemp varieties, respectively.

This indicator is used to calculate the planting value of the seed material, which is necessary for adjusting the weight-based seeding rate. Reduced germination of hemp seeds is often caused by mechanical damage sustained during combine harvesting or the development of pathogenic microflora during storage, which collectively lead to thinning of crops and a decrease in fiber and seed yields.
