Uniformity — Brussels sprout

Brassica oleracea L. (Brussels Sprouts Group)

Uniformity of plants in terms of maturity timing and morphology, as well as homogeneity of sprouts by size, which is critical for mechanized harvesting and the marketability of the produce.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Brussels sprouts, where this is mentioned in the description.

At the commercial produce level, uniformity is measured by the compliance of sprout diameter with quality standards, such as UNECE FFV-08. A batch is considered sufficiently uniform if the difference in diameter between the smallest and largest sprout does not exceed 1 cm (approximately 3/8 inch).

In breeding and field production, uniformity is assessed by the homogeneity of plants in terms of height, morphological traits, and the simultaneity of sprout maturation along the stem. A high degree of uniformity, achieved through the use of F1 hybrids, is essential for efficient machine harvesting and the elimination of complex sorting.

A decrease in the uniformity index is often caused by the use of insufficiently stable varieties or stressful agronomic factors, such as disrupted irrigation or nutrition regimes, which provoke uneven sprout development. Non-uniform produce does not meet retail chain requirements and lowers the commercial grade.
