Variety traits

Tomato Uniformity

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A complex trait characterizing the homogeneity of plants within a population and the uniformity of fruits in terms of morphological parameters and ripening times.

In the reference 81 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

Tomato fruit uniformity is assessed by compliance with varietal characteristics of size, shape, and color. A variety is considered uniform if the predominant part of the harvest belongs to the same or adjacent diameter classes, and the fruits are free from coloration defects such as "green shoulders," streaks, or spots.

Ripening uniformity determines the ability of fruits on a plant or in a cluster to reach maturity simultaneously. This indicator is critical for mechanized harvesting: a prolonged ripening period makes the efficient use of harvesters impossible due to the varying degrees of product maturity.

When evaluating uniformity, agronomists conduct biometric measurements and record the distribution of fruits by mass or size categories. High uniformity ensures compliance with market quality standards, simplifies calibration, packaging, and logistics, and also allows for the prediction of yield output.
