Plant height measurement is primarily conducted at the inflorescence heading stage. Height is determined from the soil level to the tip of the inflorescence or the point of attachment of the flag leaf, focusing on the natural orientation of the panicles. In breeding practice and variety trials, a representative group of plants from the plots is analyzed.
Linear growth is significantly influenced by mineral nutrition conditions, especially nitrogen fertilizer application, as well as the seeding method. Wide-row and precision seeding promote the attainment of maximum height values of up to 140–150 cm, whereas row seeding typically shows lower values.
Height directly determines the forage productivity and potential seed yield of the crop. When breeding tall varieties, a key factor is maintaining resistance to lodging. In turf-type applications, by contrast, preference is given to forms with moderate growth to reduce mowing frequency.
