The morphology of tall fescue rhizomes differs from that of sod-forming grasses; they are typically weak, thin, and discontinuous. Although the species is traditionally classified as a bunchgrass, breeding programs have developed a specific group of rhizomatous varieties aimed at improving the capacity for sod formation and filling gaps in the stand.
Quantitative assessment of the trait in breeding involves counting the number of rhizomes per plant, the percentage of plants possessing them, and measuring the average length of the shoots. Unlike standard forage types, where the trait is extremely weakly expressed, rhizomatous varieties possess an increased regenerative potential.
The presence of even short rhizomes contributes to better anchorage of tall fescue in the soil, which enhances the stand's resistance to erosion and mechanical stress.
