Fennel plant height

For fennel, height is measured in centimeters from the soil surface to the top of the stem or the point of inflorescence attachment. The rate of linear growth of the crop reaches up to 2.0 cm per day during the period between the leaf rosette, bolting, and flowering phases.

Height is directly dependent on the cultivar type: vegetable bulbous forms remain relatively short until the formation of a marketable bulb, whereas essential oil and medicinal forms reach significant heights during the fruiting phase. Early height increase in vegetable varieties due to bolting is considered a negative trait, as it prevents the formation of a high-quality bulb.

This trait is crucial when selecting agronomic practices. For fresh herb production, harvesting is carried out when plants reach a height of 25–30 cm. For seed production, stand height parameters determine mechanized harvesting requirements, the need for desiccation, and the selection of seeding density to manage productivity.
