During potato variety trials, plant height is determined from the base of the stem to the tip of the main stem; after the flowering phase, the length of the inflorescences is not taken into account. The values are recorded in centimeters and are an important varietal characteristic that determines the growth habit.

Optimal plant height is closely related to photosynthetic efficiency and the potential yield of the crop. Light deficiency leads to stem elongation, while temperature stress can cause either stunted growth or excessive haulm development at the expense of tuber mass accumulation.
