Cultivation
Celosia argentea L. var. cristata (L.) Kuntze
Technology for greenhouse cultivation of Celosia cristata for high-quality cut flowers, requiring strict control of ventilation and microclimate due to the crop's high susceptibility to fungal infections.
In the reference 19 varieties crop Cockscomb, where this is mentioned in the description.
Under greenhouse conditions, Celosia cristata is grown primarily as a cut flower crop, reaching a height of 71–102 cm. Plants grown in this manner possess superior characteristics for subsequent drying, making them highly sought after in floristry for the creation of winter bouquets.
The cultivation technology requires strict adherence to a temperature regime in the range of +18...+25°C and high light levels. A critical factor is the management of humidity and ventilation, as stagnant air triggers the development of fungal diseases such as Botrytis and damping-off. Unlike other crops, Celosia is extremely sensitive to drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
For the seedling stage, it is mandatory to use a sterile peat-based substrate with the addition of perlite or vermiculite. It is important to exercise caution when applying nitrogen fertilizers, as their excess stimulates vegetative growth of green mass to the detriment of flowering quality, reducing the plant's ornamental value.
