Drought tolerance of Echinacea

Echinacea Moench.

Echinacea is a drought-tolerant crop adapted to moisture deficit, with E. purpurea exhibiting greater resistance than E. angustifolia. The critical period for the plant is the rooting stage, after which the crop demonstrates high endurance to heat.

In the reference 16 varieties crop Coneflower, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate the response of Echinacea to water stress, methods of controlled irrigation regimes based on the percentage of field capacity of the soil are used, as well as the analysis of physiological and biochemical markers, such as the activity of antioxidant enzymes, the content of proline, chlorophyll, and lipid peroxidation products. Morphometric indicators, including changes in root system mass and root-to-shoot ratio, also serve as criteria for assessing the species' adaptability.

When soil moisture drops below 50% of field capacity, Echinacea biomass and productivity consistently decrease. Echinacea species differ in their level of resistance; for example, E. pallida possesses morphological features, such as a narrow-lanceolate leaf shape, which contribute to yield formation in arid conditions. In agronomic practice, the crop is recognized as highly promising for regions with limited water supply after the successful completion of the initial rooting phase.
