Echinacea Double Flowering

Echinacea double flowering is a breeding trait associated with changes in the structure of the capitulum inflorescence. Normally, Echinacea features a prominent central cone composed of disk florets; however, in double forms, these reproductive organs are replaced by petaloid structures. Evaluation of the trait is purely descriptive and classified by types: single, semi-double, fully double, or pompon-type.

The trait is characterized by instability during the early years of plant development and is dependent on growing conditions and plant age. From an agronomic perspective, double flowering has ornamental value, but it negatively affects seed productivity due to the transformation of fertile disk florets. In the commercial cultivation of Echinacea as a medicinal crop, this parameter is not a target, as breeding priority is given to biomass and the content of active substances.
