Heat tolerance of maize

To assess maize heat tolerance, a laboratory method is used to determine the retention of seed germination after heating in a water thermostat at 66 °C for 20 minutes. The indicator is calculated as the ratio of the number of germinated seeds in the experiment to the control, additionally taking into account the degree of inhibition of radicle and shoot growth.

Under field conditions, heat tolerance is evaluated using stability coefficients based on the determination of free proline concentration in leaves during peak heat stress compared to a reference cultivar. High values of these indicators signify an increased adaptive capacity of the genotype.

The temperature optimum for the development of generative organs in maize is in the range of +28…+32 °C. Exceeding these values during critical development phases negatively affects the photosynthetic apparatus, plant fertility, and the functional activity of the root system, which reduces final yield.
