The variety is an autochthonous cultivar formed as a result of long-term folk selection and adaptation to the local conditions of the island of Rab in Croatia. The name of the variety reflects its origin and morphological features: "Rapski" indicates the island of Rab, and "žuti pogačar" describes a yellow bulb of a flattened shape, resembling a flatbread or a loaf.
This onion is classified as an heirloom landrace included in the lists of protected local agricultural varieties. Detailed agronomic descriptions, such as exact maturity dates, yield indicators, or disease resistance, are absent in open sources.
