The variety «Janos» was developed at the Institute for Breeding Research in Quedlinburg in the vegetable crops department under the direction of Dr. Fritz Kampe. The variety was mentioned in the documentation of the Federal Plant Variety Office of Germany in 1980.

The goal of breeding this variety was to increase resistance to diseases and improve the internal qualities of the vegetable. According to the EU Commission, the variety's registration period officially expired on December 31, 1998.
