The variety is a compact evergreen shrub with dark green, glossy, leathery leaves. A characteristic feature of the variety is the bright red berries, which remain on the plant for a long time.

The plant is primarily used as an ornamental crop for indoor pot cultivation or for landscaping in regions with USDA climate zones 8–10. Ardisia is a slow-growing plant that requires diffused light and moderate moisture.

The species Ardisia crenata is considered invasive in a number of world regions, which must be taken into account when planning open field planting.
