The variety is a type of common oat with a black or dark-colored grain husk. It is characterized by rapid initial growth and intensive biomass formation. The plant possesses broad leaves and a developed root system. It exhibits good cold tolerance, comparable to other winter varieties, although it may winterkill in the conditions of severe northern winters.
In agronomic practice, the variety is more susceptible to rust and Barley yellow dwarf virus compared to winter rye. Due to the narrow carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in the straw, the variety effectively improves soil structure. The plant is used as a cover crop for weed suppression and soil protection, as well as forage for hay or grazing. Difficulty in controlling stands with glyphosate before the heading stage is noted.
