The variety was obtained by breeders of the company Wiersum Plantbreeding B.V. The genetic basis of the variety was formed by crossing lines Wilma and LW 7704-7. The variety has been known in European breeding practice since the mid-1990s.

The Gigant oat variety is used in agricultural production, including for feed and food purposes. Detailed morphological characteristics and current resistance indicators are limitedly represented in open access.
