The Hurdal variety belongs to the early-maturing group and is characterized by a high crude fat content in the grain. Due to its earliness, the variety is inferior in yield level to later oat varieties.
In scientific literature, the variety is widely known as an object of genetic research, particularly for mapping quantitative trait loci that determine plant height and maturity dates. The variety has also been actively used in breeding programs to study oat resistance to Fusarium and mycotoxin accumulation.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
