The Delux variety belongs to the sand oat (bristly oat) species and is very late in terms of maturity group. The plant's primary purpose is to serve as a cover crop, prevent nitrogen leaching from the soil, and control soil-borne pests.
Plants of this variety effectively reduce populations of root-knot nematodes, specifically Pratylenchus penetrans, and can be used in crop rotations as a crop unsuitable for the reproduction of this pest. Morphologically, the plants have characteristic awn-like points at the apex of the lemma.
