The plant reaches a height of 20–50 cm and is valued as an ornamental houseplant. The species was described based on specimens from China and Vietnam, and its modern name honors the collector L. Maurice Mason, who brought it from Singapore in 1952.
The begonia is sensitive to excessive moisture and requires loose, well-drained soil due to its susceptibility to root rot. Other potential issues include susceptibility to powdery mildew and bacterial leaf spot when growing conditions are not maintained.
