The variety belongs to the group of hybrid begonias Begonia × hiemalis, known as Elatior begonia or winter begonia. These hybrids were obtained as a result of long-term breeding based on Begonia socotrana and Begonia × tuberhybrida.

The variety is intended for cultivation in greenhouses and indoors as a pot plant. In published scientific data, Bellona is noted as one of the most susceptible varieties to the fungal disease Fusarium foetens within its group.
