Barese is a compact Italian variety of Swiss chard, reaching a height of 25 to 45 cm. The plant forms a rosette of dark green, glossy, smooth leaves with curled edges and wide, white, fleshy petioles.

The variety is early-ripening: when grown as baby leaf, technical maturity is reached in 25–40 days; the plant reaches full development in 50–55 days. The variety exhibits resistance to bolting and temperature fluctuations, including light frosts.

Suitable for cultivation in open field and containers; it tolerates regular harvesting of leaves as needed well. The leaves have a delicate, sweetish flavor with nutty notes and are suitable for use fresh and for culinary processing.
