The variety is an improved rhubarb-type Swiss chard. The plant forms a contrasting coloration of stems and leaf blades, which allows it to be used for both culinary and ornamental purposes.
Primarily young leaves of the crop are consumed. In the professional agronomic community, the name "Vulcan" is reserved exclusively for this Swiss chard variety, while the use of this name in the context of sugar beet is erroneous.
