The plant forms a tall central stem 0.6 to 1.5 meters high, with a loose rosette of narrow, long leaves developing at the top. The leaf blades have a dark blue-green, almost black color and a pronounced blistered, leathery texture.

The variety is of folk selection, cultivated as an annual or biennial crop with a growing season of 90–120 days. It is an open-pollinated variety that retains its varietal characteristics through seed propagation.
